The Best Time to Start a Bathroom Remodel

January 25, 2018

One of the most common questions about remodeling a bathroom is, “When is the best time of year to start a remodel?”.  While a bathroom renovation can technically take place at any time of the year, planning to renovate at specific times can help move the process along smoothly.

Any type of home improvement project can take a great deal of time to complete – from hiring the contractors to choosing and ordering the products.  A bathroom remodels can take anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months, depending on the extent of the upgrade.  Timing your remodel around the needs of your family is a priority (for example, you wouldn’t want to start a remodel when you’re in-laws will be staying with you for a month), but there are other things to consider to help your project go smoothly.

Best Time to Purchase Products

The best time of the year to purchase products, such as plumbing hardware or tile, is usually in the winter, after the holidays. The fall is a busy time for the design industry since many homeowners are trying to complete their renovation projects before the holiday season. By holding off on purchasing products until December through March, you'll experience emptier showrooms, get more attention from design consultants, and you may even be able to get products at lower prices through negotiation.

Many bathroom furniture showrooms hold winter sales or specials and some may even offer flexible pricing. During this time, showrooms tend to have a decrease in foot traffic, making it easier for shoppers to take their time and get extra assistance from salespeople. Even if you don't plan on starting the bathroom renovation project until the early summer, ordering products in the winter can save valuable time and money.

Hiring a Contractor

Reputable contractors are often in high demand, so secure your contractor in advance of starting your project.  If you are flexible, have your contractor start your project during their slow time - you are more likely to have their full attention if they are not trying to juggle other jobs in addition to yours.  Plus, you’ll experience fewer delays when ordering toilets, sinks, bathroom vanities, and other fixtures if your contractor is working during the slower months.

Fall is the busiest time of the year for home renovations of any type, due to the upcoming holiday season. To ensure the best contractor is able to take on your project, consider waiting until the spring to begin renovating. Slow times for contractors could also mean a reduction in pricing!

Benefits of Spring/Early Summer

Spring or early summer are great times to plan your remodel.  In between the holidays and summer vacation, contractors are often more available during the early part of the year and products are more likely to be in stock and easier to procure.  In addition, the longer days and cooperative weather make any type of remodel easier.  If you're planning for a spring or early summer remodel, remember it's not unusual to book a job as early as six months in advance.
