What To Do With Your Old Vanity

4-1-18

Spring is officially here and it’s time to get rid of the old and bring in the new! If it’s time for a new bathroom vanity or a whole bathroom remodel, consider going green with your old furniture and fixtures. At Strasser Woodenworks, finding ways to reduce waste and implement environmentally-friendly manufacturing practices is part of who we are.

Used bathroom furniture, like vanities, can be donated at a local thrift store or non-profit organization, and old fixtures or hardware can be recycled. If your old furniture is lightly used and still in good condition, selling it is a great way to give your old furniture a second life and it puts a little cash back in your pockets.

Whether you are donating or selling your old items, it is best to have all of the necessary pieces of the furniture. A missing drawer or cabinet can make it difficult to donate as most places will only accept what you are offering if it is a complete piece. Even if it isn’t as lovely as it used to be, or missing some hardware, most places will still accept them and use them in some way.

There are a number of ways to re-sell your old furniture.  From yard sales to online services such as Craigslist or Freecycle.org, it is easy to sell used items to people who are looking for just the right piece for their home – and at an affordable price.  Even if your old items are worn or missing pieces, if you are upfront about the condition of what you are trying to sell, and price it right, you can often find someone who is willing to buy it and refurbish it or use it for pieces for another project.

To donate used furniture, places such as Goodwill or St. Vincent de Paul will accept just about everything.  You can also try calling Northwest Center or Habitat for Humanity to donate your vanity or any other remodeling pieces. Habitat for Humanity will come and remove whatever you are donating, which will save you the hassle of having to do it. If they can’t use the pieces in one of the homes they are building then they are sold in a Habitat ReStore. The sales from this store are used to help fund the building of homes.

If you are donating furniture, don’t forget to get a RECEIPT. Come tax time, you can claim tax deductions if you have a receipt for your donated items. This is an added benefit of donating your old vanity.
